The Grand Duchy is a founder member of the European Economic Community (the precursor to the European Union) and forms, together with Belgium and the Netherlands, the Benelux countries. Luxembourg is the second smallest country in the European Union with a territory of just 2,586 square kilometres. The population of some 493,000 speak mainly Luxembourgish, a Franconian Moselle dialect of German. French and German have also been declared official languages since 1984 and the country has developed itself into a major financial centre and a headquarters location for many international organisations. In 1994, UNESCO declared Luxembourg's historic city centre to be part of the Cultural Heritage of Mankind. At the same time, Luxembourg´s animal world boasts a larger than average amount of red deer and wild boar, as well as birds of prey.
